VMware<\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From Punch Cards to Cloud \u2014 Remembering the Software That Made Complexity Feel Simple<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are some technologies we use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are some technologies we learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then there are technologies that leave a feeling behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For me, VMware is one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently, while moving through today&#8217;s maze of cloud platforms, artificial intelligence, Kubernetes, GPUs, containers and agentic AI, I suddenly remembered VMware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I realized:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>I had lost touch with a technology I once admired enormously.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not because it disappeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But because the technology world around it became so busy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware was sleeping in my memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A wonderful software baby toy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I wanted to know what happened to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My journey started long before VMware<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My computing journey did not begin with cloud computing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It began in a very different world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I remember the era of <strong>IBM, punch cards and terminals<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Computing was physical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Machines were expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Computing resources were limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Software and hardware had a close relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The computer was the computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The operating system belonged to the computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Applications belonged to the operating environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then came personal computers, networking, client-server computing, enterprise applications and the Internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Every generation solved some problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Every generation also created new ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then came VMware.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The little magic of VMware Workstation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My own VMware experience was primarily with <strong>VMware Workstation<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The idea was astonishingly simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Run multiple operating systems on the same physical PC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Multiple virtual machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I could run different operating systems and environments without needing a separate physical computer for each one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today, this sounds completely normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the time, it felt like magic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was almost like a software toy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A physical computer became a playground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I could create a computer inside my computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is why I like the phrase <strong>&#8220;software baby toy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It wasn&#8217;t meant to diminish VMware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It expresses the sense of wonder I experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sometimes the most important technologies first appear to us as toys.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The villain was complexity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The hero of this story is VMware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But every good story needs a villain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The villain was\u2014and still is\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>complexity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the early days, the complexity came from hardware and software being closely connected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you needed another computing environment, you often needed another machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you wanted to test something, you needed another environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you wanted to isolate workloads, physical infrastructure was part of the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware introduced an abstraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The physical machine remained underneath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the user could interact with a virtual machine instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That small conceptual shift was enormous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The question changed from:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8220;Which physical machine am I using?&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8220;What computing environment do I need?&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The baby grew up<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware was founded in 1998 by five engineers, and VMware Workstation 1.0 was introduced in 1999. Soon after came ESX Server, taking virtualization from the desktop into the server world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was the point at which my little software toy became part of a much bigger story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware was no longer simply about running multiple operating systems on one PC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was about virtualizing the data center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then came technologies and capabilities that made virtualization operationally powerful:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>vSphere.<br \/>vMotion.<br \/>High Availability.<br \/>DRS.<br \/>Virtual networking.<br \/>Virtual storage.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The physical server was gradually becoming less important as the primary unit of thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The virtual machine became the unit of computing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That was beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware changed the question<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before virtualization, the conversation often began with hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How many servers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How much memory?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How much storage?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Which machine?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Where should the application run?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware changed the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We could start thinking about workloads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Compute became more fluid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Infrastructure became more abstract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The data center increasingly began to look like software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That was a profound change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then the cloud arrived<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The next major abstraction was Cloud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Instead of owning every physical infrastructure component, organizations could consume computing resources as services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The industry moved again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware moved with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The company expanded its vision from server virtualization into software-defined data centers, networking, storage, hybrid cloud and application platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The little baby toy had become enterprise infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then VMware itself entered another journey<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware went through major corporate transitions over the years\u2014from its founding, to EMC, to Dell Technologies, and eventually back to independence before being acquired by Broadcom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on <strong>November 22, 2023<\/strong>. Broadcom subsequently placed VMware Cloud Foundation at the center of its private and hybrid cloud strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For longtime VMware admirers, this is a very different chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The VMware I remember as a wonderful software toy is now part of a much larger infrastructure strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And that strategy is moving again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware and the AI era<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fascinating part is that VMware has not stopped evolving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2026, VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1 is positioned as an AI- and Kubernetes-native private-cloud platform for production AI workloads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Broadcom has also introduced <strong>VMware AI Factory<\/strong>, describing it as a software-defined foundation for VMware Private AI Cloud, aimed at simplifying the journey from infrastructure to production AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is something almost poetic about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware began by helping us separate the operating system from the physical computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now it is being positioned to help enterprises manage the infrastructure beneath AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The technology has grown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The world has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the underlying problem remains familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The villain has changed its costume<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is the part that interests me most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The old villain was:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Hardware + Operating System complexity<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The new villain is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Cloud + Containers + Kubernetes + APIs + GPUs + AI Models + Agents + Security + Orchestration<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We have moved from physical complexity to software complexity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The machines have become more powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The abstractions have become more sophisticated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But complexity keeps returning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perhaps that is one of the great laws of technology:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Every time we solve one layer of complexity, the next layer appears.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And that is why I still appreciate VMware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware did not eliminate complexity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It <strong>hid complexity behind an abstraction that people could understand and use<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is a much more profound achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maybe that is VMware&#8217;s real legacy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">VMware&#8217;s greatest contribution may not be any single product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It may be the idea that <strong>infrastructure does not have to look like the hardware underneath it<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One physical computer can look like many computers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many physical servers can look like one resource pool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A data center can look like software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And perhaps today&#8217;s AI infrastructure will require the same kind of thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We are again surrounded by complexity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maybe we need another generation of abstraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maybe the next &#8220;VMware moment&#8221; is already happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I lost VMware in the maze<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My journey started with punch cards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I travelled through IBM systems, terminals, PCs, enterprise applications, the Internet, virtualization, cloud and now Generative AI and Agentic AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Somewhere along the way, I lost VMware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But perhaps I didn&#8217;t really lose it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I simply moved into another maze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And when I looked back, I remembered that wonderful little software baby toy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The one that made one physical computer behave like many.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The one that made me feel that computing did not always have to be limited by what I could see physically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The one that quietly taught me a lesson I still find relevant today:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Technology does not always defeat complexity by making things simpler underneath.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sometimes it defeats complexity by giving us a better way to think about it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That is what VMware gave me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And that is why, after all these years, I still have a special place for VMware in my memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>From punch cards to cloud.<br \/>From VMware to AI.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
